UNDERSTANDING CHALLENGES – WATER

WATER

Ecology Water Population Energy

This is all of the water in the world. The sphere to the right of the globe depicts all of the water on Earth which, when compared to the size of the planet, is an astonishingly small volume. Yet an even smaller amount, 0.3% of this water-groundwater, freshwater lakes, and rivers-is available for human consumption. This tiny dot of water is all that we have to supply to the world's 6.7 billion people, and it is not distributed evenly throughout the globe. The 0.3% of water that we can use is not used only for drinking. Industrial and agricultural uses also make up a significant portion of global water usage, and this amount is continuing to grow with the rising population; meanwhile these sources of water are being extracted faster than they can be naturally replenished
